Flight Change Fees: Complete Guide for US Travelers
Flight change policies have evolved significantly. Most major US airlines have eliminated change fees for standard economy and above, but fare differences and basic economy restrictions still apply.
Current Change Fee Landscape
As of 2026, most legacy US carriers (including the major domestic airlines) no longer charge change fees for Main Cabin and above on domestic and short-haul international routes. However, Basic Economy fares often cannot be changed at all.
What May Still Apply
- Fare difference: If the new flight has a higher fare, the airline may require you to pay the difference
- Basic Economy: Often non-changeable; may require canceling and rebooking
- International routes: Some carriers still charge fees on certain international fares
- Same-day changes: Policies vary; some airlines offer free standby, others charge
How to Avoid Change Fees
- Book Main Cabin or higher instead of Basic Economy
- Change within 24 hours of booking (DOT rule)
- Look for schedule change notifications — airline-initiated changes may allow free changes
- Check if your credit card offers trip change protection
When a Travel Agent Helps
Complex changes — multiple passengers, connecting flights, or travel credits — can be easier with agent assistance. A licensed agent can compare options across fare classes and apply credits correctly.
